Biomass-based value webs are complex systems of interlinked value chains in which food and non-food biomass is produced, processed, traded and consumed. The value web approach allows identifying synergies and trade-offs between the value chains of individual crops, especially when incorporating coupling and cascading uses of biomass. The approach provides a conceptual framework for incorporating the expertise of a wide range of stakeholders from different disciplines.
Further information on the value web approach and its system-based foundations can be found in Virchow et al. (2016): Biomass-Based Value Webs: A Novel Perspective for Emerging Bioeconomies in Sub-Saharan Africa.
