Summary of our Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) applies to the Service available from the domain and sub-domains of www.biomassnet.org , offered by BiomassNet (“Service”) or its affiliates. This Policy tells you about how we collect, process, store, use, protect and disclose your personal information, including information related to your past use of the Service. Personal information is information about you that is personally identifiable like your name, address, email address, or phone number, and that is not otherwise publicly available.

You are contracting with the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (“FARA”), a company limited by guarantee. FARA is incorporated and existing under the laws of the Republic of Ghana with subsidiaries in other jurisdictions. It is located at 12 Anmeda Street, Roman Ridge, Accra, Ghana, who owns and operates BiomassNet. In this Policy FARA and its contracting parties are known as “BiomassNet”, “we”, “us” or “our”.

Scope


When you sign up for or onto the Service, we ask you for personal information. This Policy describes how we handle the personal information you provide to us. It applies generally to the Service and content and other related websites. By accepting this Policy, you expressly consent to our collection, storage, use and disclosure of your personal information as described in this Policy. This Policy is effective between new users and BiomassNet when new users accept it. It is otherwise effective on July 12, 2017.

Collection


Browsing our websites does not require you to provide or reveal any personal data about yourself, thus you remain anonymous to us up until this stage. When you register with BiomassNet and sign on to the Service, you are not anonymous to us.  You consent to the transfer to, storage in, and processing of, that information on our computers located in Ghana and Germany and elsewhere in the world.

BiomassNet collects personal information when you register with BiomassNet, when you use the Service, when you visit BiomassNet web pages or the pages of certain partners and affiliates of BiomassNet. BiomassNet may combine personal information about you that we have with information we obtain from business partners or other affiliated companies.

When you register with BiomassNet, we ask for your personal information such as your name, email address, birth date, gender, ZIP code, occupation, industry, and personal interests.

BiomassNet collects information about your transactions with us and with some of our business and affiliate partners, including information about your use of the Service.

BiomassNet automatically receives and records information from your computer and browser, including your IP address, BiomassNet cookie information, software and hardware attributes, and the page you request.

Additionally, BiomassNet may ask you to submit more information to authenticate yourself or if we believe you are violating this Policy or our Terms and Conditions (for example, we may ask you to send us an ID or bill to verify your address, or to answer additional questions online to help verify your identity or ownership of an item you list);

BiomassNet collects information from other companies, such as demographic and navigation data;

Marketing


We view the protection of your personal information as a very important community principle so we do not sell or rent your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes without your explicit consent.

We use your personal information only as described in this Policy.

We may combine your information with information we collect from other websites and companies affiliated to us and use it to improve and personalize our Service, content and advertising. If you do not wish to receive marketing communications from us or participate in our ad-customisation programmes, please set your BiomassNet notification preferences so we communicate to you as you prefer.

Use


BiomassNet uses your personal and other information collected to customize the advertising and content you see, fulfill your requests for products and customer Service, improve our Service, contact you, conduct research, and provide anonymous reporting for internal and external clients.

You agree that we may use your personal information to:

  • provide the Service and customer support you request;
  • resolve disputes and troubleshoot problems;
  • prevent potentially prohibited or illegal activities, and enforce our Terms and Conditions
  • customise, measure and improve our Service, content and advertising;
  • tell you about our Service and those of our corporate family, targeted marketing, Service updates, and promotional offers based on your communication preferences; and
  • compare information for accuracy and verify it with third parties.

Information Sharing and Disclosure


BiomassNet does not rent, sell, or share personal information about you with other people or non-affiliated companies without your expressed consent except to provide the Service and answer to customer requests from you. When we have your permission, or under the following circumstances:

  • We provide the information to trusted partners who work on behalf of or with BiomassNet under confidentiality agreements. These companies may use your personal information to help BiomassNet communicate with you about BiomassNet, other users of the Service and our marketing partners. However, these companies do not have any independent right to share this information.
  • We have a parent’s permission to share the information if the user is a child under age of 18. Parents have the option of allowing BiomassNet to collect and use their child’s information without consenting to BiomassNet sharing of this information with people and companies who may use this information for their own purposes.
  • We respond to subpoenas, court orders, or legal process, or to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims.
  • We believe it is necessary to share information in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person, violations of BiomassNet’s Terms and Conditions, or as otherwise required by law.
  • We transfer information about you if BiomassNet is acquired by or merged with another company. In this event, BiomassNet will notify you before information about you is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
  • Without limiting the above, in an effort to respect your privacy and our ability to keep the community free from bad actors, we will not otherwise disclose your personal information to law enforcement, other government officials, or other third parties without a subpoena, court order or substantially similar legal procedure, except when we believe in good faith that the disclosure of information is necessary to prevent imminent physical harm or financial loss or to report suspected illegal activity.

BiomassNet displays targeted advertisements based on personal information. Advertisers (including ad serving companies) may assume that people who interact with, view, or click targeted ads meet the targeting criteria.

  • BiomassNet does not provide any personal information to the advertiser when you interact with or view a targeted ad. However, by interacting with or viewing an ad you are consenting to the possibility that the advertiser will make the assumption that you meet the targeting criteria used to display the ad.

BiomassNet may work with vendors, partners, advertisers, and other service providers in different industries and categories of business.

Information Security


BiomassNet takes appropriate security measures to protect against breaches or unauthorised access to or unauthorised alteration, disclosure or destruction of data. These include frequent internal reviews of our data collection, storage and processing practices and security measures, including appropriate encryption and physical security measures to guard against breaches or unauthorised access to systems where we store personal data.

We restrict access to personal information to BiomassNet employees, partners, affiliates and agents who need to know that information in order to process it on our behalf. These individuals and persons are bound by confidentiality obligations and may be subject to discipline, including termination and criminal prosecution, if they fail to meet these obligations.

We treat your personal information and communication as an asset that must be protected and use lots of tools including encryption, passwords, physical security, etc, to protect your personal information against breaches or unauthorised access and disclosure.

However, as you may well know, third parties, not working with or for BiomassNet, may unlawfully intercept or access transmissions or private communications, and other users may abuse or misuse your personal information that they collect from BiomassNet or sites affiliated to BiomassNet. Therefore, although we work very hard to protect your privacy, we do not guarantee, and you should not expect that your personal information or private communication will always remain private.

Cookies


BiomassNet uses “cookies” (a small piece of information sent by a web server to a web browser, which enables the server to collect information from the browser) on certain of our pages to help analyze our web page flow; customise our Service, content and advertising; measure promotional effectiveness, and promote trust and safety.

When you visit BiomassNet’s web pages or the pages of our affiliates, partners and agents, we send one or more cookies to your computer or other device. We use cookies to improve the quality of our service, including for storing user preferences, improving search results and ad selection, and tracking user trends, such as how people search.

You are always free to decline our cookies if your browser permits, although doing so may interfere with your use of some of our sites or the Service.

No Spam


We do not tolerate spam (unsolicited commercial communications). Please set your BiomassNet notification preferences so we communicate to you as you prefer. You may not add other users of the Service, even as a user of the Service, to your mailing list (e-mail or physical mail) without their consent.

You may not use our communication tools to send spam or otherwise send content that would breach this Policy or our Terms and Conditions. If you send an e-mail to an e-mail address that is not a registered BiomassNet e-mail address belonging to a BiomassNet member, we do not permanently store that e-mail or use that e-mail address for any marketing purpose. We do not rent or sell these e-mail addresses.

We automatically scan and may manually filter messages to check for spam, viruses, phishing attacks and other malicious activity or illegal or prohibited content, but we do not permanently store messages sent through these tools.

Account Safety


Your password is the key to your account.

We advise you to choose and use unique numbers, letters and special characters. Your password should be a combination of numbers, letters, both upper and lowercase and special characters; and should be at least 8 characters long.

Do not share or disclose your password to anyone!

If you do share your password or your personal information with others, remember that you are responsible for all actions taken in the name of your account. If you lose control of your password, you may lose substantial control over your personal information and may be subject to legally binding actions taken on your behalf. Therefore, if your password has been compromised, you should immediately notify BiomassNet and change your password.

Access, Review and Change of Personal Information


We give you access and allow you to review and change most of your personal information by signing on to BiomassNet. Generally, we will not manually modify your personal information because it is very difficult to identify you remotely.

We advise you to update your personal information as soon as possible if it changes or is inaccurate.

You may not be able to change or remove a public posting. However, upon your request, we will close your account and remove your personal information from view as soon as reasonably possible, based on your account activity and in accordance with applicable law.

We do retain personal information from closed accounts to comply with law, prevent fraud, collect any fees owed to us or other users of the Service, resolve disputes, troubleshoot problems, assist with any investigations, enforce our Terms and Conditions and take other actions permitted by law.

Right to Stop Communication


Without prejudice to any prior accrued rights or obligations you may, at anytime, cease all communications with BiomassNet by unsubscribing from the Service. You may unsubscribe from the Service through your account settings page (click on “account” and got to the “settings” tab) or writing to us at:

Disclosure to Third Parties


This Policy addresses only the use and disclosure of information we collect from you, except as otherwise expressly stated herein. It does not cover information disclosed by you to third parties, whether they are bidders, buyers or sellers or to other sites throughout the internet. Different rules may apply to the disclosure of personal information to third parties. BiomassNet does not control the privacy policies of third parties. We advise you to ask questions before you disclose your personal information to others.

This Policy may be reviewed or amended at anytime by posting the amended terms on this site. All amended terms automatically take effect 15 days after they are initially posted on our websites.
