Summary of our Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) applies to the Service available from the domain and sub-domains of www.biomassnet.org , offered by BiomassNet (“Service”) or its affiliates. This Policy tells you about how we collect, process, store, use, protect and disclose your personal information, including information related to your past use of the Service. Personal information is information about you that is personally identifiable like your name, address, email address, or phone number, and that is not otherwise publicly available.

BiomassNet is a Service provided by the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (“FARA”). FARA, a company limited by guarantee, is incorporated and existing under the laws of the Republic of Ghana with subsidiaries in other jurisdictions. It is located at 12 Anmeda Street, Roman Ridge, Accra, Ghana, who owns and operates BiomassNet. In this Policy FARA and their contracting parties are known as “BiomassNet”, “we”, “us” or “our”.

Scope


This Policy describes what information we collect from you and how we handle the personal information you provide to us. When using our website, we process personal data that your browser transmits to our server to enable the presentation of our website and to guarantee its stability and security. When you sign up for or onto the Service, we ask you for personal information. It applies generally to the Service and content and other related websites. By accepting this Policy, you expressly consent to our collection, storage, use and disclosure of your personal information as described in this Policy. This Policy is effective between new users and BiomassNet when new users register with our Service. It is otherwise effective on May 25, 2018.

Data Collection


When using our website, we process personal data that your browser transmits to our server. This includes the IP address, date and time of the request, time zone difference to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), content of the request (the specific page), the access status or HTTP status code, the amount of data transmitted, the website from which the request comes, the browser used, the operating system and its interface as well as language and version of the browser software. The processing of data enables the presentation of our website and also serves in particular to guarantee its stability and security.

Registration: When you register with BiomassNet and sign on to the Service, you are not anonymous to us. When you register with BiomassNet, we ask for your personal information such as your name, email address, and a password. You consent to the transfer to, storage in, and processing of, that information on our computers located in Ghana and Germany and elsewhere in the world. You further have the opportunity to voluntarily present biographical and other information in your profile on our platform.

Other information: Additionally, BiomassNet may ask you to submit more information to authenticate yourself or if we believe you are violating this Policy or our Terms and Conditions (for example, we may ask you to send us an ID or bill to verify your address, or to answer additional questions online to help verify your identity or ownership of an item you list).

Data Use


BiomassNet uses your personal and other information collected to customize the advertising and content you see, fulfill your requests for products and customer Service, improve our Service, contact you, conduct research, and provide anonymous reporting for internal and external clients.

You agree that we may use your personal information to:

  • provide the Service and customer support you request;
  • resolve disputes and troubleshoot problems;
  • prevent potentially prohibited or illegal activities, and enforce our Terms and Conditions
  • customise, measure and improve our Service, content and advertising;
  • tell you about our Service and those of our corporate family, targeted marketing, Service updates, and promotional offers based on your communication preferences; and
  • compare information for accuracy and verify it with third parties.

Information Sharing and Disclosure


We only pass on the personal data we collect to third parties if this is justified under data protection law. Specific information on scope and recipients can be found in the above provisions. In addition, we will only disclose your personal data to other companies and individuals we have commissioned to perform individual tasks and services for us. The transfer of your personal data to these companies is limited to what is necessary to carry out their activities. These companies are bound by data protection regulations, have been carefully selected by us and are regularly monitored by us. In addition, we will only pass on your personal data to third parties if we are obliged to do so by law or court order.

Information Security


BiomassNet takes appropriate security measures to protect against breaches or unauthorised access to or unauthorised alteration, disclosure or destruction of data. These include frequent internal reviews of our data collection, storage and processing practices and security measures. We restrict access to personal information to BiomassNet employees, partners, affiliates and agents who need to know that information in order to process it on our behalf. These individuals and persons are bound by confidentiality obligations and may be subject to discipline, including termination and criminal prosecution, if they fail to meet these obligations.

Personal data will only be stored for the period necessary to achieve the storage purpose or if this has been provided for by law. Accordingly, personal data will be routinely blocked or deleted if the purpose of storage ceases to apply or a legal deadline expires.

However, as you may well know, third parties, not working with or for BiomassNet, may unlawfully intercept or access transmissions or private communications, and other users may abuse or misuse your personal information that they collect from BiomassNet or sites affiliated to BiomassNet. Therefore, although we work very hard to protect your privacy, we do not guarantee, and you should not expect that your personal information or private communication will always remain private.

Account Safety


Your password is the key to your account. We advise you to choose and use unique numbers, letters and special characters. Your password should be a combination of numbers, letters, both upper and lowercase and special characters; and should be at least 8 characters long. Do not share your password with anyone. If you do share your password or your personal information with others, remember that you are responsible for all actions taken in the name of your account. If you lose control of your password, you may lose substantial control over your personal information and may be subject to legally binding actions taken on your behalf. Therefore, if your password has been compromised, you should immediately notify BiomassNet and change your password.

Cookies

BiomassNet uses “cookies” (a small piece of information sent by a web server to a web browser, which enables the server to collect information from the browser) on certain of our pages to help analyze our web page flow; customise our Service, content and advertising; measure promotional effectiveness, and promote trust and safety.

When you visit BiomassNet’s web pages or the pages of our affiliates, partners and agents, we send one or more cookies to your computer or other device. We use cookies to improve the quality of our service, including for storing user preferences, improving search results and ad selection, and tracking user trends, such as how people search.

You are always free to decline our cookies if your browser permits, although doing so may interfere with your use of some of our sites or the Service.

No Spam


We do not tolerate spam (unsolicited commercial communications). Please set your BiomassNet notification preferences so we communicate to you as you prefer. You may not add other users of the Service, even as a user of the Service, to your mailing list (e-mail or physical mail) without their consent.

You may not use our communication tools to send spam or otherwise send content that would breach this Policy or our Terms and Conditions. If you send an e-mail to an e-mail address that is not a registered BiomassNet e-mail address belonging to a BiomassNet member, we do not permanently store that e-mail or use that e-mail address for any marketing purpose. We do not rent or sell these e-mail addresses.

We automatically scan and may manually filter messages to check for spam, viruses, phishing attacks and other malicious activity or illegal or prohibited content, but we do not permanently store messages sent through these tools.

Contact by E-mail or Contact Form


When you contact us by e-mail, the data you provide (your e-mail address, if applicable your name and your organization) will be stored by us in order to answer your questions. We delete the data arising in this context after the storage is no longer necessary, or limit the processing if statutory retention obligations exist. The same applies if you use our contact form. All that is required to contact you in this way is your name and e-mail address. Further information – such as your company and your telephone number – is voluntary. Data that you enter in our contact form is transmitted between your browser and our server in encrypted form (SSL).

Integration of Google Maps


On this website we use the offer of Google Maps. This allows us to display interactive maps directly on the website and enables you to conveniently use the map function.
By visiting the website, Google receives the information that you have called up the corresponding subpage of our website. In addition, the data referred to in section 1.1 of this declaration will be transmitted. This is regardless of whether you have a Google account and whether you are logged in to that account. If you are logged in to Google, your information will be directly associated with your account. If you do not wish to be associated with your profile on Google, you must log out before activating the button. Google stores your data as usage profiles and uses them for purposes of advertising, market research and/or demand-oriented design of its website. Such evaluation takes place in particular (even for unlogged-in users) to provide demand-oriented advertising and to inform other users about your activities on our website. You have a right to object to the creation of these user profiles, whereby you must contact Google to exercise this right.

Web Analysis by Matomo (formerly PIWIK)


On our website we use the open source software tool Matomo (formerly PIWIK) to analyse the surfing behaviour of our users. The software uses cookies on the user’s computer (see above for cookies). If you access our website, the following data is stored:

  1. Two bytes of the IP address of the user’s calling system
  2. The accessed website
  3. The website from which the user has accessed the accessed website (referrer)
  4. The accessed sub-pages
  5. The time spent on the website
  6. The frequency with which the website is accessed

The software runs exclusively on the servers of our website. A Users’ personal data is only stored there. The data will not be passed on to third parties. The software is set so that the IP addresses are not completely stored but two bytes of the IP address (e.g..: 192.168.xxx.xxx). This makes it possible to assign the abbreviated IP address to the calling computer is no longer possible.
The processing of the personal data of the users helps us to improve our website and its user-friendliness.

Access, Review and Change of Personal Information


We give you access and allow you to review and change most of your personal information by signing on to BiomassNet. We advise you to update your personal information as soon as possible if it changes or is inaccurate. You further have the right to obtain information about the personal data we collected from you, to ask for correction of personal data, to ask us to limit our processing of your data, to cancel your registration and account, and to appeal to a supervisory authority. To obtain information about your personal data, to delete or change the data, please contact us.

Right to Stop Communication


Without prejudice to any prior accrued rights or obligations you may, at any time, cease all communications with BiomassNet by unsubscribing from the Service. You may unsubscribe from the Service through your account settings page (click on “account” and got to the “settings” tab to delete your account) or contact us.

Disclosure to Third Parties


This Policy addresses only the use and disclosure of information we collect from you, except as otherwise expressly stated herein. It does not cover information disclosed by you to third parties, whether they are bidders, buyers or sellers or to other sites throughout the internet. Different rules may apply to the disclosure of personal information to third parties. BiomassNet does not control the privacy policies of third parties. We advise you to ask questions before you disclose your personal information to others.

General


This Policy may be reviewed or amended at anytime by posting the amended terms on this site. All amended terms automatically take effect 15 days after they are initially posted on our websites if not stated otherwise.
